Where Are You Now
Welcome to the world of Location Based Services (LBS). With the ever increasing
inclusion of GPS features in mobile devices such as mobile phones, smartphones and
PDA's it becomes possible to enhance our daily activities by taking advantage of
our current location. For example:
You don't even need the latest hardware as you can obtain a GPS Bluetooth adapter
which can work with most Bluetooth enabled mobile phones.
What is wruNow
wruNow is a Web based service which handles real-time logging of the geographical
location of anyone with a wruNow enabled mobile device. wruNow can be used by installing
a simple software program on your device, though more sophisticated wruNow-enabled
software can be used for more advanced activities. Register
now to download free applications for your mobile device.
The wruNow website provides a public interface for registered users to monitor or
track the movements of 'friends', or even themselves. This is achieved by
providing a Microsoft Virtual Earth map with either a single location or a logged
route.
Applications
A range of applications are available including:
mBikeRide
mBikeRide
is a PDA based software package for
planning and logging progress on a journey. It is geared round OS maps and although
originally designed with the cyclist in mind it is equally good for walking and
trekking, based as it is on OS Landranger mapping. mBikeRide makes use of a mobile
phone based internet connection to continuously upload positional information to
the wruNow web service. This makes it possible to track individuals in real-time,
although there will be an inevitable delay when in a mobile phone black spot.
InYourTracks
InYourTracks is the simplest of applications.
It simply keeps regular contact by uploading positional information to the wruNow
web service. It requires no user interaction, but allows enabled 'friends'
to check your position via the wruNow website.
TrackMe
TrackMe is a personal training logging application. Your wruNow enabled mobile device
logs your training route to allow you (or your friends) to review your training run (walk, ride etc.)
YouGotMe
YouGotMe is a mobile device based strategy game
for multiple participants. Players each have their own system and can see the relative
positions of their rivals. A variety of team based and individual games can be played
ranging over a wide range of terrains and areas, from a local park, to a city or
even the whole region. Participation can be on foot, on a cycle or even in cars
or public transport.
